The Mutineers Charles Boardman Hawes 9781374887084 Books

Written in the first person, this is the story of a young man, Benjamin Lathrop, age 12, and his older friend, who is in love with the boy's sister. The two of them sign on to go to sea in a merchant vessel owned by the young man's father -- only to find the second mate and others are in on a plot to take over the ship and seize the captain's valuable cargo for themselves. The second mate and those with him must first get the captain and the first mate killed in such a way that there appears to have been no dirty work done. Then the second mate can assume the captaincy. The boy and his older friend see what's afoot and seek for a way to stop this and save the owner's ship and precious cargo. But can they, and if they cannot, could they then manage to carry on a justified mutiny to depose the second mate and most of the crew, who support him? The two have very little support, but at times support seems to come from the physically powerful but wily old Negro cook. For a great tale of the sea, read this book!

The Mutineers Charles Boardman Hawes 9781374887084 Books Reviews

Charles Boardman Hawes was a short-lived author of age-of-sail fiction for boys. His few novels were serialized in THE OPEN ROAD magazine, then published in book form by Atlantic Monthly Press. There have been many editions since. This seems to be his first novel, from circa 1919, and it has a serious defect not found in his later, more famous novel THE BLACK FRIGATE.

Perhaps misled by what was required of juvenile fiction of the day, Hawes puts mind-numbing, maddening repetition throughout the first 3/4 of the novel. Every character is described in precisely the same few sentences, and speaks the same characteristic line, whenever he appears! The character descriptions almost always involve things we should have been SHOWN, not told. Events are pretty tedious and predictable until about 3/4 of the way through, when all the characters wind up in desperate straits and the author manages to create and maintain continuous suspense.

Another problem is that the narrator, a lad named Benjamin Lathrop, is spectacularly dense and slow on the uptake. His slowness allows the shrewdness and wisdom of two other sympathetic characters, Roger Hamlin and Frank the Cook, to hold center stage. Frank is a particularly interesting character for 1919 fiction, since he is black and speaks in a music-hall Amos'n'Andy dialect, yet is along with Roger the only one to completely understand the rapidly changing situations.

The basic plot is that an 1809 merchant voyage from Salem, MA, to Canton, China goes spectacularly off course and off the rails. The two main villains, Falk and Kipping, are so manifestly villainous (they do everything but twirl mustachios and cackle) that it is preposterous that they were ever included in the crew. Since the book is called THE MUTINEERS it would not surprise the reader that a mutiny is involved, but in fact the only mutiny that is technically such is carried out by the good guys, not the villains.

In reading my ex-library copy, I found that I must have been the first reader to finish the novel, because a number of pages in the last 1/5th of the volume had never been separated since coming from the printer, and were still attached. Not a good sign.

Worth reading if you think you would enjoy a fairly accurate depiction of life on an early 1800s merchant ship out of New England, and can overlook the presentational blunders of an inexperienced author.
A pretty good read. C. B. Hawes is absolutely talented. If your into swashbucklers at all this one will fill the bill.
Interesting story albeit a bit old fashioned. Perhaps that is what I liked about it. Although it is not a power packed story, it is however well written and enjoyable to read.
Exciting and well written from beginning to end. Would do well as a movie. I'll even direct it if I get my choice of actors
very very very good. My favorite
This is a very good book. I would not hesitate to recommend it. It was written some sixty years ago, if the introduction is correct, but even in this day and age, is still very relevant. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Unequivocally, I recommend this book. Yes,it's dated, but, that makes it all the more worthy of reading. If you enjoy the sea and sailors please visit anthonydunphyfineart.com for my paintings of the sea and the men who sailed on her.
